I tend to be a night owl, so most of my training hikes have been in the evenings. Monday night was no exception. After walking up the fairly well lit hills of Ashland's south side, I continued into the darkness of Siskiyou Mountain Park. A few weeks ago, while on the same path, when the way got darker, I decided not to venture into the unknown. Monday night was different.
Especially when there is moonlight, I find flashlights to be a nuisance. They tend to prevent our natural night…

This morning started well and the day just kept getting better. I was up early enough for meditation and breakfast before 10am! Usually by that time on the weekends I'm just rolling over to listen to NPR. But there was more progress to be made. Saturday morning I was determined to get an earlier start than most weekends. It was going to be my 'long' day of 3+ hours. While the terrain was not difficult, the distance wore me out a little. One of my great joys is to grow my own food and I have a small 10x10 plot in the Ashland Community Garden. With proper rotation and selection of plant varieties, I have lots of delicious, nutritious veggies to use during the spring/summer/fall growing season. But when Winter hits I start to run out of homegrown produce. This…
